In 1982, Leslie Hindman founded Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago, Illinois, and within a few years it grew to be the largest auction house in the Midwest, and one of largest in the country. As a result of the firm's outstanding reputation, it was acquired by Sotheby's in 1997. When the opportunity presented itself, Leslie reopened Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in 2003 and continued her growth trajectory.
Also part of the Hindman family of auction houses, Cowan's Auctions was opened in 1995 by Wes Cowan in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cowan's quickly earned a reputation for integrity, customer service and great results. In 2018, these two firms became the foundation for Hindman, a rapidly growing organization with the ambition to be the nation's most client-centric auction house.

Native American Art, Session II
Freeman | Hindman is pleased to bring you our Session II of our Fall auction of Native American Art featuring property from many of the same collections as Session I. During Timed auctions, a countdown clock is displayed on the main auction page and on the lot level. These auctions have a “rolling close,” with each lot closing in a staggered manner after the previous lot. For these auctions, the countdown clock on the main auction page will be counting down to the close of the first lot. Individual lots will have their own countdown clocks, indicating the specific closing time for that lot. If a bid is placed within one minute of the closing time of a lot, five additional minutes will be added to the designated closing time for that lot. Please note that the extension of one lot’s closing time does not affect other lots’ closing times.

The Collection of Dr. Richard J. Wattenmaker
Freeman’s | Hindman is honored to present the sale of the Collection of Dr. Richard J. Wattenmaker on September 22, 2024.Comprised of American and European Fine Art, Furniture and Decorative Arts, the single-owner event will pay tribute to the Philadelphia author, teacher, and scholar's eclectic taste and extensive knowledge. Richard J. Wattenmaker was often described as an art savant. Born in Philadelphia in 1941, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, while also studying at the Barnes Foundation under Violette de Mazia. He continued his education at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, where he received his MA and PhD. Starting his career as the Director of Rutgers University Art Gallery, Wattenmaker subsequently became the Chief Curator of Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario, Director of the Chrysler Museum, and Director at the Flint Institute of Arts. Wattenmaker also worked as the Director of the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art for seventeen years, and taught at the Barnes Foundation, where a yearly scholarship is still offered in his name. Throughout his career, he oversaw major shows and lectures dedicated to many of the artists for whom he would eventually become the leading reference, such as William Glackens, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, brothers Maurice and Charles Prendergast, as well as Jean Hugo, great grandson of poet and novelist Victor Hugo, whom Wattenmaker and his wife Eva knew personally and regularly visited in the South of France. The sale also includes fine redware and stoneware examples, Fraktur, a painted and decorated blanket chest, an important pair of pewter chargers, and a significant selection of American and European Ironwork, including utensil racks with accompanying utensils, several steeple cocks, and multiple mounts.

Carrying on the tradition of market-pacing offerings by Chicago artists, the sale boasts a spectacular array of exceptional examples by homegrown talents Gertrude Abercrombie, Roger Brown, Richard Hunt, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Christina Ramberg, Julia Thecla, Ray Yoshida, and Karl Wirsum.
